Sophomore Slump

I’m really struggling with my work in progress.

Really.

Really, really, really.

I’ve been told by several people in the publishing world that it’s not uncommon for authors to have a difficult time writing their second book. I know, for me, part of the problem is expectation. My first novel didn’t have to be any good – I had no one waiting for it, no one expecting it to be marketable, no one to impress. Now, with my contract signed, a deadline, and a publisher expecting something at least as compelling as Home Another Way, I’m agonizing over every word. And it’s giving me a headache.

My agent told me of an author – he couldn’t remember who, but it was someone who had a breakout first novel – who said he planned to skip over his second book and just go write his third. If only it was that simple. I’ve never been one who could *trick* myself into something. Some people set their clocks 10 or 20 minutes ahead, so when they wake in the morning, they’re fooled by the time, and instead of being late, they find they’re walking out the door with minutes to spare. When I do that, I simply wake up with the alarm, subtract the overage from the time, a pop the snooze button a couple more times.

Nine months and counting.

It’s Official…

The title of my first novel is Home Another Way – release date, September 2008.

I should have a cover design to share in a couple of weeks :)
